I actually tried a lot of different options on my first order because I didn't have a sense of how things were going to come out. Now I'm thinking that the solid color background give the images the greatest impact. But it does seem that you have to vary it. Some things look better on a black background and some better on white. The key aesthetically seems to be contrast. Light, especially glowing colorful figures look amazing on black. But if the character has a lot of dark edges, I'd go with white. Using complimentary colors, a bright orange background with a blue figure for example also looks awesome.
Using the color band around the image to set up monster distinct groups for quick readability works well too. The shading around the gold edged special tokens with the black background has to be my favorite. And I gather this shading may become an option for all color bands.
The cobblestone and other backgrounds look ok, but they don't look good consistently against all the characters. Some get lost in the image. Hope this helps.
